Georgia Laying Drag Laws
Laying drags is defined by O.C.G.A. § 40-6-251(a) as operating a vehicle “in such a manner as to create a danger to persons or property by intentionally and unnecessarily causing the vehicle to move in a zigzag or circular course or to gyrate or spin around.”
Laying drag can be on highways, streets, private property or in parking lots. One of the most common ways people “lay drags” is by doing donuts.
Exception to Laying Drag in Georgia
There is an exception to the law if the individual lays drag only as a necessary maneuver to avoid a collision, injury, or damage. The law also does not apply to drivers operating vehicles in or on any raceway, drag strip, or similar place customarily and lawfully used for such purposes. O.C.G.A. § 40-6-251(c).
Penalties for Laying Drag in Georgia
A conviction for laying drag will be considered a misdemeanor. In Georgia, misdemeanor convictions come with a fine up to $1,000, jail time up to 12 months, or both. In addition, a laying drag ticket will come with 3 points being added to your license. If you have other tickets on your license, this could result in a license suspension.
However, a laying drag ticket is oftentimes accompanied by a racing or reckless driving ticket. Both racing and reckless driving come with serious consequences and if this applies to you, it is critical that you hire an experienced Georgia Laying Drags Attorney immediately.
